Alright, let's start with something that annoys every contractor and facility manager: there isn't one 'best' Georgia-Pacific product. There's only the best product for the problem in front of you. And in my world—coordinating rush material orders for commercial and residential jobs—that distinction makes the difference between a smooth install and a costly mistake.
I've handled 200+ rush orders in the last eight years, including same-day turnarounds for clients who didn't plan ahead. If there's a pattern, it's this: people reach for a familiar product before they ask what the panel needs to do. So let's fix that.
Here's the short version. If you need strength, moisture resistance, or subflooring, go with plywood. If you need a smooth paint-ready surface, go with Georgia-Pacific MDF. If you need to stop noise, you're looking for sound proofing panels. If you need a fast floor refresh, peel and stick floor tile is a reasonable call.

Pick plywood. When I call a distributor, I ask for the specific grade, not just 'plywood.' A Georgia-Pacific plywood plant makes a range of things: sheathing, sanded plywood for cabinets, and underlayment. The right one depends on where it will live.
For subflooring, you want something with a structural rating. Three-quarter-inch CDX is common for residential floors, but it's not automatically right for every job. If the subfloor sits above a humid crawlspace, ask for exposure-rated plywood. For a wet area like a shower wall backing, you don't want raw plywood at all. You'd want a tile backer board like DensShield. That's a Georgia-Pacific product, but it's not plywood. It's a glass-mat panel designed for tile. That's a good example of why product category matters.
If you're installing peel and stick floor tile over a wooden subfloor, a smooth sanded plywood underlayment is often worth the extra step. Peel-and-stick conforms to what's underneath, and rough seams show through fast.
Georgia-Pacific MDF is the default for a reason. It has no grain, no voids, and a uniform density that makes it easy to machine. For trim, wainscoting, shelving, and paint-grade cabinet doors, it's often the better product than plywood.
MDF got a bad rap for years. The older fiberboards did swell when they got damp. Today's MDF is a different animal, especially the interior-grade panels. But it's not waterproof. If the project is in a basement or a bathroom with no humidity control, MDF is the wrong call. Plywood with a moisture barrier can handle it better.
One thing I've learned: if you're using MDF, predrill your screw holes. A stripped screw in MDF can tear the fibers and leave a hole that's hard to repair.
Also, MDF is heavier than you expect. Don't try to hold a 4x8 sheet with one hand while you screw it in. Use a second pair of hands or a couple of sawhorses. And wear a mask when you cut it—MDF dust is very fine and takes a while to settle.
Sound proofing panels are not the same as acoustic foam. Acoustic foam absorbs echo and makes a room feel quieter. Sound proofing panels are designed to stop sound from passing through a wall or ceiling. You need STC ratings, decoupling, and often a full wall assembly, not just one panel screwed to the studs.
The mistake I see: someone puts decorative plywood over a shared office wall and expects the conversation next door to disappear. That doesn't happen. A single layer of wood paneling does little for sound transmission. If you need privacy between rooms, look at sound proofing panels, mass-loaded vinyl, or resilient channels. The product data sheet should show an STC number, usually measured with ASTM E90. If it doesn't, ask for it.
Honestly, I'm not sure why some salespeople still recommend acoustic foam as soundproofing. My best guess is it's cheaper and looks impressive. It's not the same fix. For a retrofit, sound proofing panels with a rated assembly are often more practical than tearing the wall down.
Peel and stick floor tile used to be a cheap, temporary material. The new stuff can be genuinely useful. It's quick, no grout, and you can put it over clean, flat subfloor or an old vinyl floor. For a rental unit, an office restroom, or a pop-up space, that can save your weekend.
What most people don't realize is that peel-and-stick tile failure starts with poor prep. The subfloor has to be smooth and dry. If there are seams in the plywood underlayment, fill them flush before you install. And don't use it for a high-traffic lobby if you expect 20 years of hard wear. It's not that product.
If you're putting peel-and-stick over a wood subfloor, a Georgia-Pacific plywood underlayment with a sanded face gives you a better surface than raw sheathing. Buy extra if you're matching a pattern. A 10% waste allowance is usually enough.
Stripped screws happen to everyone. You're driving a screw into plywood or MDF, the bit kicks out, and now the head is rounded. Here's the order I use:
In MDF, be more careful. The material is softer than plywood, and an extractor can chew out the board around the screw. In plywood, you have more forgiveness because the grain gives the screw something to release. But in both materials, the real trick is to avoid getting there: use a sharp bit, match the screw head size, and predrill in MDF.

This isn't about being picky. It's about the cost of a wrong guess. A plywood shelf in a bedroom looks wrong. MDF in a crawlspace swells. Acoustic foam on a shared wall does nothing. A stripped screw can eat a half-hour out of a tight install.
I still kick myself for using MDF in a damp entry sign project a few years ago. It looked great for four months, then the edges grew fuzzy. If I'd read the spec sheet more carefully, I'd have known. That's the point: the materials are good, but they're only good in their right places.
The industry has evolved, and this is honestly one of the best times to be choosing materials. What was best practice in 2020 may not apply in 2025. New versions of MDF, peel-and-stick tile, and acoustic panels have filled gaps that used to make these products limited. The fundamentals haven't changed: start with the problem, then pick the product. Check the current product data sheets at Georgia-Pacific's site before you place a big order. I do, even after eight years of this.
