MDF is an engineered panel made from wood fibers and resin, pressed under heat. Georgia Pacific MDF is a brand I'm comfortable with for interior trim—it's flat, smooth, and easy to machine. But it is not a waterproof material. When water sits on an unpainted or unsealed edge, the fibers swell and the core wicks moisture. A product that's "close enough" to spec isn't close enough when you're installing 200 linear feet of it.
I won't give you a fixed price because it varies by region and ordering volume. But from a 2024 distributor quote for a typical 200-foot project, solid wood baseboard ran about 30-40% more than MDF. For a single room, that's a small difference. For a whole house, it matters.

If the room is dry, painted, and you want a smooth, uniform finish, Georgia Pacific MDF is a solid choice. It holds paint well, stays flat, and installs cleanly. If the room has moisture risks—a bathroom, mudroom, unheated garage, or near a dishwasher—solid wood is the safer call.
